1968 Mattel Hot Wheels "Redlines"

Gran Toros were an extension of the successful Hot Wheels line. Hot Wheels first appeared in 1968 and featured translucent "candy" paint Mattel called "spectraflame" as well as oversized wheels mounted on piano wire that made them very fast. These tires had red stripes modeling the high-performance tires of the day. Today collectors refer to Hot Wheels with red-striped tires, made between 1968 and 1977, as "Redlines". They were packaged under the Ruote Brucia Pista name in Italy. This page shows the "original 16" Hot Wheels from 1968.

My very first Hot Wheels:

I bought this car with my paper
route money.
The back window is cracked and the
roof is very rough from trips through a
"Rod Runner".
Many of my childhood memories return when I hold this car.It was, and still is, my favorite.
This Mustang is on it's third set of replacement (reproduction) wheels; the originals broke years ago.
