Gran Toros / Sputafuoco Alfa Romeo 33/3The Alfa Romeo Type 33 race cars were made between 1969 and 1972 and featured rear-mounted 2998 cc (183 cubic inch) V8 engines and a tubular aluminum chassis. The Alfa 33/3 (Type 33 / 3-Litre) appeared in 1969 and began racing on the international racing scene in 1970. The 33/3 had a 3-litre engine that generated up to 400 horsepower, a 6-speed transmission, and 15-inch rear wheels. A replica of the Alfa Romeo 33/3 racing car, this Gran Toros model, Mattel # 6612, was created for the Gran Toros Hot Wheels Super Racers series and never released in the "Mebetoys" series. One of the original Gran Toros, it was part of the Sputafuoco and Heisse Räder Supergorss series and first appeared on the bottom of the North American Gran Toros box, the 1970 Mattel Toyfair catalog, the 1970 Mattel Italian Dealer catalog and the 1970 Hot Wheels International catalog. This Gran Toros model featured opening doors and compartments, different wheel hubs from the other Gran Toros models, and white and yellow/gold chrome plated engine. The Gran Toros Alfa Romeo 33/3 was one of the most common models in the series and was issued in the metallic red color. |
